JPEG2000 ROI coding through component priority for digital mammography

Abstract: Region Of Interest (ROI) coding is a prominent feature of some image coding systems aimed to prioritize specific areas of the image through the construction of a codestream that, decoded at increasing bit-rates, recovers the ROI first and with higher quality than the rest of the image. JPEG2000 is a wavelet-based coding system that is supported in the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard. Among other features, JPEG2000 provides lossy-to-lossless compression and ROI coding, which are … Show more

“…Interaction can also be enhanced by selectively compressing the more relevant areas with lossless quality and the rest of the image [42] with some loses. Different works have adapted and implemented wavelet-based [43,44] and JPEG2000 approaches [42,45] to ease the access to specific image areas. In the proposed approach the entire WSI was assumed to be relevant and a free lossless navigation was so possible.…”

“…In JPEG2K (Bartrina-Rapesta et al, 2011), ROI coding is the scaling method in which the wavelet coefficients belonging to the contextual regions are shifted upward. Moreover this method allows the use of arbitrary scaling value.…”

“…Among others, this requirement may appear in devices with memory constrained resources, when images with a very high bit-depth have to be coded, or when the use of ROIspecific techniques that enlarge the dynamic range of the image [43] are in use. 2SDQ is applied in codeblocks that have M x > M max removing R x = M x − M max magnitude bits, with M max denoting the maximum number of magnitude bits allowed.…”
