JPEG XR an Image Coding Standard

Abstract: Abstract-JPEG XR is an emerging image coding standard, based on HD Photo developed by Microsoft technology. It supports high compression performance twice as high as the de facto image coding system, namely JPEG, and also has an advantage over JPEG 2000 in terms of computational cost. JPEG XR is expected to be widespread for many devices including embedded systems in the near future. This review-based paper proposes a novel architecture for JPEG XR encoding. This paper gives discussion of image partition and w… Show more

“…However, JPEG XR was the fastest encoder of all the codecs that were evaluated by 9 seconds on average and used 487MB less RAM and 822MB less video memory on average than JPEG 2000 (Figures 6-9). These findings may be partially attributed to JPEG XR's use of a form of adaptive Huffman entropy coding [42], [43]. Though often suboptimal in terms of compression, Huffman coders are less complex and faster than arithmetic coders [39], [44].…”

“…Moreover, the Joint Photographic Experts Group has been promoting the development of image compression standards for nearly 30 years. The group has continuously introduced JPEG-LS, JPEG 2000 [4], JPEG XR [5], and other better codec standards, but JPEG still dominates the market, which shows that the performance of JPEG can meet the demand compared to other more complex codec standards. Low complexity and easy implementation are more important [6][7].…”

“…The experimental research [14] has proven that JPEG XR and JPEG2000 demonstrate higher visual quality than JPEG compression under the high compression ratio. The JPEG2000 compression standard has a more complicated algorithm than the JPEG standard [15]. Compared to the JPEG2000 compression standard, JPEG XR has lower complexity and produces similar PSNR quality at the same bit rate.…”
