Journalists–sources relationship in violent conflicts coverage: Shifting dynamics

Abstract: News sources are a major part of news production in times of violent crisis and conflict. They can shape the context in which journalists see and frame the events. “…These transformations question some of the foundational mechanisms of public problem studies and media sociology, such as the "elite bias" hypothesis (Best, 2010). Particularly in crises, government officials may be confronted with an increasing diversity of media formats, as well as alternative claims' makers, and compete with both traditional and new media actors to gain dominance in definition struggles (Glazier and Boydstun 2012;Gonen 2018;Gunter 2005;Ungar 1998). Complete withholding of information has become difficult in many cases.…”

It is therefore assumed that journalists’ reliance on their intuition is heightened; for example, the tendency to judge the in-group as more reliable and trustworthy than the out-group (Posten and Mussweiler 2013) might grow.…”

“…While public trust in news media is a trust in journalism , an examination of journalists’ own attitudes as trustors constitutes trust within journalism (Blöbaum 2014). Research within the latter category has considered trust as a key component in the journalist–source relationship (Gonen 2018; Mancini 1993; van Dalen et al 2011; Wintterlin 2017). Nevertheless, several studies have shown that journalists regularly doubt their sources and verify, interpret, and negotiate their testimony (Godler and Reich 2017; Mancini 1993).…”
