As PSM change and adapt –with variable outcomes– to a digital and multiplatform environment, their roles and functions are overly under severe scrutiny. The normative expectations of PSM and their performance have been extensively discussed from a theoretical and regulatory approach, but studies from an audience perspective are still rather scarce. If PSM's primary stakeholder is to be considered the citizenship it serves, it is, therefore, vital to understand what is valuable to society and how citizens assess PSM's performance. Drawing upon representative survey data from Spain (N = 1717), this study examines the role played by structural and perceptual variables in accounting for the citizen's assessment of the national public broadcaster (TVE), considering six roles: watchdog, analysis, mobilization, public forum, social empathy, and information. Findings first indicate that perceptions of independence and citizens' evaluation of TVE's journalists are positively associated with all dimensions of TVE evaluations. However, when exploring the role of political knowledge, results indicate a negative association with some of PSM's most critical functions. All in all, our research illustrates that, despite all the changes in the media landscape, when it comes to delivering the news, citizens seem to stick to values traditionally associated with PSM: independent and qualified journalism trained for and committed to the public service of delivering accurate and unbiased information.

Los medios de comunicación sufren una fuerte crisis de credibilidad en la era digital, derivada de un bajo consumo, la aparición de sistemas mediáticos híbridos o la consolidación de las redes sociales como espacios informativos. Todo ello ha llevado a la información profesionalizada a un segundo plano, diluyendo el valor de la verdad. En este contexto cambiante, el presente capítulo efectúa una revisión de los elementos del periodismo, definidos por la propuesta ya clásica de Kovach y Rosenstiel en 2001. El objetivo es actualizar estos parámetros, así como proporcionar un modelo que posibilite recuperar el papel de los periodistas en la configuración de una ciudadanía formada y responsable.Entre los elementos del periodismo, la verdad constituye el primero en orden de importancia, pero también el más confuso por las presiones que dificultan su consecución. Además, la irrupción de las nuevas tecnologías, con formatos dinámicos y accesos no mediados a las fuentes, ha complicado aún más este proceso. En cualquier, nuestra contribución concluye que dichas transformaciones no han modificado sustancialmente los elementos del periodismo, puesto que pervive una función de servicio público clave para que la deliberación social se desarrolle de manera informada. El auge de la difusión masiva de falsedades refuerza la necesidad de contar con una actividad informativa profesionalizada, que cumpla con los valores clásicos del sector. “…The traditional connection in journalism between work and life has been blurred, and the periods of work and rest become closely related (Kalinowski, 2019; Pajnik and Hrženjak, 2020). Moreover, the escalating pattern of employment destruction and the weaker role of unions have turned journalism into a growing precarious occupation (Amado and Waisbord, 2018; Deuze and Witschge, 2018; Waisbord, 2019; Goyanes et al, 2020), where both the traditional reluctance to change (Gade, 2004) and the typical lack of contestation to the way things are done (Ryfe, 2012), have been heightened by job insecurity (Ekdale et al, 2015). The practice and structural conditions of the journalism craft provide fertile grounds for facilitating the emergence of conflicts in the newsroom. However, extant research on journalism studies have largely neglected the boundary conditions for their emergence and the individual and organizational mechanisms displayed to unravel them. Based on in-depth interviews with 40 Spanish journalists, we conceptualize newsrooms’ conflicts as the dark side of journalism and examine the structural and individual factors that nurtures their appearance. We also clarify the main strategies for conflict management, arguing that conflict resolution is typically based on informal mediation strategies, rather than institutionalized plans directly implemented by news organizations.
