Journal Rankings, Collaborative Research and Publication Strategies: Evidence from China

Abstract: The primary focus of our paper is on the potential for in-house journal ranking lists to create friction between international collaborating researchers due to differences in how particular journals are rated on different lists. Using a questionnaire distributed to Chinese accounting researchers, we identify a number of potential friction points between Chinese and UK researchers. “…Cross-border cooperation connects researchers with different sets of talents from different institutions or different countries to produce a research output (Kumar and Jan, 2013). To illustrate, when conducting international projects where researchers from a single country do not have full knowledge of business practices within other countries, international collaboration would make it easier for them to address country-specific issues (Hussain et al , 2015). “…Reinstein and Calderon () identify a number of reasons for studies focused on research productivity. In particular, they note that productivity rankings can be used in career decisions such as merit, tenure and promotion (see also Hussain, Liu, Wang, and Zuo, ; Moore, ); and rankings can be used to help benchmark research productivity standards. Research productivity literature may also be helpful to accounting academics in exposing them to journals outside the mainstream, and thus may suggest other publication outlets to them.…”
