Metropolitan networks are undergoing a major technological breakthrough leveraging the capabilities of softwaredefined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV). NFV permits the deployment of virtualized network functions (VNFs) on commodity hardware appliances which can be combined with SDN flexibility and programmability of the network infrastructure. SDN/NFV-enabled networks require decision-making in two time scales: short-term online resource allocation and mid-to-long term offline planning. In this paper, we first tackle the dimensioning of SDN/NFV-enabled metropolitan networks paying special attention to the role that latency plays in the capacity planning. We focus on a specific use-case: the metropolitan network that covers the Murcia-Alicante Spanish regions. Then, we propose a latency-aware multilayer service-chain allocation (LA-ML-SCA) algorithm to explore a range of maximum latency requirements and their impact on the resources for dimensioning the metropolitan network. We observe that design costs increase for low latency requirements as more data center facilities need to be spread to get closer to the network edge, reducing the economies of scale on the IT infrastructure. Software Defined Networking (SDN) controllers decouple the forwarding data-plane actions, instructed via southbound interfaces (SBI), from the logic control-plane decisions, which can be decided by network applications exploiting the northbound interfaces (NBI). This paper overviews the achievements of INPIRING-SNI, a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action that aims at enhancing programmability in optical SDN ecosystems from two perspectives: SBI for interacting with optical equipment and NBI for exposing programming abstractions that ease the development of network applications. INSPIRING-SNI focused on disaggregated approaches for SBI based on YANG models while proposing an innovative approach for the NBI based on the concept of network optimization as a service (OaaS) with an extension of the Net2Plan planning tool.

Media services must ensure an enhanced user’s perceived quality during content playback to attract and retain audiences, especially while the streams are distributed remotely via networks. Thus, media streaming services rely heavily on good and predictable network performance when delivered to a large number of people. Furthermore, as the quality of media content gets high, the network performance demands are also increasing, and meeting them is challenging. Network functions devoted to improving media streaming services become essential to cope with the high dynamics of network performance and user mobility. Furthermore, new networking paradigms and architectures under the 5G networks umbrella are bringing new possibilities to deploy smart network functions, which monitor the media streaming services through live and objective metrics and boost them in real-time. This survey overviews the state-of-the-art technologies and solutions proposed to apply new network functions for enhancing media streaming.
