Joint video/depth/FEC rate allocation with considering 3D visual saliency for scalable 3D video streaming

Abstract: For robust video plus depth based 3D video streaming, video, depth and packet-level forward error correction (FEC) can provide many rate combinations with various 3D visual qualities to adapt to the dynamic channel conditions. Video/depth/FEC rate allocation under the channel bandwidth constraint is an important optimization problem for robust 3D video streaming. This paper proposes a joint video/depth/FEC rate allocation method by maximizing the receiver's 3D visual quality. Through predicting the perceptual … Show more

“…8, when the PLR is less than or equal to 6%, the three FEC schemes all exhibit high performance. When the PLR is 8%, 10%, 12%, 14%, 16%, 18%, and 20%, the PFR is respectively 0.939, 0.8841, 0.8535, 0.811, 0.7733, 0.7199, and 0.6823 for frame-level FEC [7] and 0.9729, 0.9421, 0.911, 0.8643, 0.8439, 0.791, and 0.7029 for time-order slidingwindow FEC [18]. When the proposed FEC scheme is used, the PFR is further increased to 0.992, 0.9891, 0.9886, 0.9825, 0.9783, 0.9493, and 0.8982, respectively.…”

“…For video plus depth based 3D video representation [5], Scalable Video Coding (SVC) [6] can be used to provide the flexible adaptations to the heterogeneous networking environments. To provide scalable virtual view qualities, SVC is sometimes independently used for video and depth [7] in the 3D video streaming.…”
