Joint Switch Upgrade and Controller Deployment in Hybrid Software-Defined Networks

Abstract: To improve traffic management ability, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are gradually upgrading legacy network devices to programmable devices that support Software-Defined Networking (SDN). The coexistence of legacy and SDN devices gives rise to a hybrid SDN. Existing hybrid SDNs do not consider the potential performance issues introduced by a centralized SDN controller: flow requests processed by a highly loaded controller may experience long tail processing delay; inappropriate multi-controller deployment … Show more

“…• Controller Placement Problem (CPP) PoCs: As stated in section 2.3.8 this problem can lead to critical issues in SDN and hSDN architectures and, therefore, it needs to be properly addressed and studied. To the best of our knowledge, there are only two works that analyze this problem proposing solutions for hSDN environments [87], [86]. We identify two main open challenges for the CPP in hybrid legacy/SDN networks: -Deployment model.…”

“…Two interesting works have been recently published on the CPP in hSDN. Guo et al [86] study the joint optimization of upgrading the numbers of SDN switches and controllers in hSDN networks under a budget constraint. Deploying multiple controllers should take the following two factors into account: First, controllers should be able to process a number of flow requests in a timely manner, otherwise it will impact in the network performance.…”

“…Thus, integrating legacy devices with the controller only or with both controller and SDN devices of the data layer is considered a quantum leap over the traditional network. [14]. First, current devices may not need to be replaced because they provide essential and indispensable services.…”

“…The programmability of flows is an essential feature of SDN [19][20] [21]. Taking the routing problem as an example, the programmability of a flow is the ability to change the flow's path.…”
