Joint Stability Characteristics of the Ankle Complex in Female Athletes With Histories of Lateral Ankle Sprain, Part II: Clinical Experience Using Arthrometric Measurement

Abstract: Changes in ankle-complex laxity and end-range stiffness were detected in ankles with histories of sprain. These results indicate the presence of altered mechanical characteristics in the soft tissues of the sprained ankles.

“…The values for the degree of inversion in CAI patients ranged from 4.8 ± 3.4° in an MRI measurement to 35.7 ± 6.1° for the Hollis arthrometer . Ten studies reported an increase in inversion ROM, while one study reported a decrease in total ROM compared to a healthy contralateral ankle in unilateral CAI . However, only four of the ten studies reported a statistically significant increase .…”

“…Other devices inferred a certain degree of validity from in vitro cadaver experiments . While some experimenters measured rotational stiffness as a means of joint excursion in degrees per Nm, most other results were summarized as the inversion range of motion (ROM), sometimes the entire ROM including eversion was measured. The values for the degree of inversion in CAI patients ranged from 4.8 ± 3.4° in an MRI measurement to 35.7 ± 6.1° for the Hollis arthrometer .…”
