Joint report1 of the First International Workshop on Lymphocyte Alloantigens of the Horse held 24–29 October 1981

Abstract: SummarySix equine lymphocyte alloantigen (ELA) specificities were defined by an international antiserum comparison test and workshop held in 1981. Twelve laboratories from four countries submitted 195 antisera for analysis. The antisera were exchanged among the 12 laboratories and tested in a standard lymphocyte microcytoxicity assay against the isolated lymphocytes at 1009 horses of several breeds. The data was pooled and analysed by a single computer analysis. The calculated χ2 values of all cells with all a… Show more

“…Most of these investigations have focused on the equine lymphocyte antigen (ELA) system, which is believed to be the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of the horse (Lizary et al, 1980a, b;Mottironi et al, 1981;Antczak et al, 1982;Bailey, 1983). Early descriptions of a complex genetic organization of the ELA region detectable by cytotoxic antisera (Bailey, 1980;Lazary et al, 1980a), have not yet been confirmed at the level of international workshops on the ELA system (Bull, 1983;.…”

“…Since then, several laboratories have performed serological and genetic studies on the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of the horse (Bailey, 1980;Lazary et al, 1980a, b;Mottironi et al, 1981;Antczak et al, 1982). During the first international workshop on equine lymphocyte alloantigens (ELA) (Bull, 1983) an international nomenclature was accepted defining 6 allelic ELA specificities called ELA-W1, W2, W3, W4, W5 and W6. Additional ELA specificities ELA-W7, W8, W9 and W10 were accepted as a result of the second international workshop (Bailey et al, 1984).…”

“…The MHC of the horse has been characterised sufficiently to permit typing of animals for Class I MHC antigens Bull 1983;Bailey et al 1984). These equine MHC antigens are referred to as equine lymphocyte antigens (ELA).…”
