Joint Redundant and Random Network Coding for Robust Video Transmission over Lossy Networks

Abstract: Abstract. In this paper a novel unequal packet loss protection scheme R2NC based on low-triangular global coding matrix with ladder-shaped partition is presented, which combines redundant and random network coding for robust H.264/SVC video transmission. Firstly, the error-correcting capabilities of redundant network coding make our scheme resilient to loss. Secondly, the implementation of random network coding at the intermediate nodes with multiple input links can reduce the cost of network bandwidth, thus r… Show more

“…This allows for the determination of the propagation delay between network nodes and the calculation of data transmission delay. Consequently, a network transmission delay matrix is constructed [28]. The propagation delay is defined as the ratio of the distance between network nodes to the data propagation speed.…”

“…Galois field size of 8 is selected to guarantee linear independence with a very high probability at application layer [ 29 ]. There is no standard method for selecting a field size, but there are majority of works that consider the Galois field size of 8 [ 19 , 30 ]. Table 2 describes the main simulation parameters.…”

“…In particular, the network that imposes packet loss should have a technology to compensate the loss for a robust quality media transmission. The third paper [3] from Xingjun Zhang, Cuiping Jing, Feilong Tang, Scott Fowler, Huali Cui, and Xiaoshe Dong, entitled "Joint Redundant and Random Network Coding for Robust Video Transmission over Lossy Networks" proposes a novel network-coding scheme that combines the redundant and the random network coding algorithms. The redundant network coding encodes the media packets to enhance the robustness of the lossy network, which reduces the error rate.…”
