Joint Reconstruction of Image and Motion in Gated Positron Emission Tomography

Abstract: Abstract-We present a novel method for joint reconstruction of both image and motion in positron-emission-tomography (PET). Most other methods separate image from motion estimation: They use deformable image registration/optical flow techniques in order to estimate the motion from individually reconstructed gates. Then, the image is estimated based on this motion information. With these methods, a main problem lies in the motion estimation step, which is based on the noisy gated frames. The more noise is prese… Show more

“…One way in which this has been done is to maintain a separate transformation for each image, but to include a temporal smoothness cost term which penalises transformations that do not change smoothly in time (Ambwani et al, 2011;Blume et al, 2010;Klein et al, 2001). Another way is to extend the transformation model to the temporal dimension, i.e.…”

“…In their algorithm, a different 3D image is estimated for every frame of a 4D image. Blume et al (2010) estimate image and motion simultaneously for PET data. Their general approach is similar to the one presented in this paper.…”

“…Q. Freeze technology registering PET by OFM was applied for motion estimation, whereas the validation with ground truth was missing and only the relative correlation coefficient was presented [23]. The OFM basically calculates the flow information according to the changes in image intensity between two images.…”
