Joint optimization of high-speed train timetables and speed profiles: A unified modeling approach using space-time-speed grid networks

Abstract: This paper considers a high-speed rail corridor that requires high fidelity scheduling of train speed for a large number of trains with both tight power supply and temporal capacity constraints. This research aims to systematically integrate problems of macroscopic train timetabling and microscopic train trajectory calculations. We develop a unified modeling framework using three-dimensional space-time-speed grid networks to characterize both second-by-second train trajectory and segment-based timetables at di… Show more

“…For around five decades, studies have been performed on energy-efficient train operation for electric and diesel trains (see, e.g., [6][7][8][9][10][11][12]). The proposed solutions cover a wide range of applications from diesel heavy haul trains (e.g., [13]) to multiple-train operation (e.g., [14][15][16]).…”

“…Liu et al [21] further considered an extended version of household activity scheduling problem by using a cumulative space-time-state representation to reduce the number of complex constraints. A space-timespeed hyper-network and the corresponding dynamic programming algorithm are introduced by Zhou et al [22] with applications in joint optimization of train timetables and speed profiles. A resource-space-time network was adapted by Lu et al [23] to consider time-dependent routing applications with energy resource considerations.…”
