Joint optimization of energy efficiency and system reliability for precedence constrained tasks in heterogeneous systems

Abstract: Voltage scaling is a fundamental technique in the energy efficient computing field. Recent studies tackling this topic show degraded system reliability as frequency scales. To address this conflict, the subject of reliability aware power management (RAPM) has been extensively explored and is still under investigation. Heterogeneous Computing Systems (HCS) provide high performance potential which attracts researchers to consider these systems. Unfortunately, the existing scheduling algorithms for precedence con… Show more

“…In [7], the scheduling algorithm for dependent multi-version tasks is studied based on Forward List Scheduling with the goal of minimizing the total energy consumption under real-time constraint. Approaches execute a recovery task, e.g., individual [8] or shared [2,9], or both [10], with maximum frequency, exploring available time slack to meet the reliability constraint. Last, approaches apply task replication.…”

“…It has proposed a constraint logic programming-based algorithm which can synthesis the fault-tolerance schedules for finding schedulable and reliable results within limited hardware and energy resources. An optimization scheme for joint reliability and energy management in DAG applications through adopting the shared recovery technique has been proposed in [111]. To solve the mentioned problem, this paper has proposed three algorithms that each of them consists of three steps: i) Task priority establishment phase, ii) Frequency selection phase, and iii) Processor assignment phase.…”

“…In a computing system that supports DVFS technology, the reliability of the system is affected by the frequency of the individual processors, 31 and a decrease in processor frequency increases the risk of system failure. Therefore, processors operating at different frequency levels will have different failure rates.…”
