Joint Displays of Integrated Data Collection in Mixed Methods Research

Abstract: Mixed methods researchers need tools for planning and demonstrating integration. Mixed methods joint displays have a growing presence in the literature for representing mixed methods findings, and for use as an analytic tool as in the case of joint display analysis. However, the joint display of integrated data collection represents a lesser-known application for use by mixed methods researchers. A joint display for integrated data collection links the qualitative and the quantitative data collection questions… Show more

“…We used the merging approach to integrate the results of the quantitative and qualitative components after they were both analyzed separately. Mixed methods results are reported in using a narrative weaving approach, where quantitative and qualitative results are written together on a theme-by-theme basis [31, 40]. Integration was conducted manually by the primary author (SAO) and validated by the second author (GHA).…”

“…This approach would enable us to merge the 2 forms of data (quantitative and qualitative) based on matching the constructs held in common. We chose to develop a joint display of data collection based on existing literature 3,17 but soon recognized construction of this table would require multiple iterations to fully organize integrated data collection. We ultimately used a methodologic process with 4 iterations to develop the final joint display of integrated data collection.…”

“…1 In less than a decade, the creation of joint displays has emerged as a powerful tool to plan integrated data collection, conduct mixed qualitative and quantitative data analyses, 2 and illuminate, in final published form, the complex interactions, relationships, and merging of the qualitative and quantitative data. 3 Miles and Huberman 4 first described joint displays, alternatively termed joint matrix or integration displays, 5 as overall visual presentations of merged quantitative and qualitative data. These tables or figures serve as powerful tools that enable investigators to convey the complex relationships between qualitative and quantitative data.…”

“…Amid conceptual agreement regarding the need for systematic integration in MMR, identifying applicable frameworks for doing so remains a challenge. Joint displays support integration across the research process, including data collection, analysis, and representation of findings (Fetters & Tajima, 2022). As a tool for representing results, joint displays convey integration through the juxtaposition of qualitative and quantitative data, findings, and related meta-inferences.…”
