Effective file transfer is fundamental to many applications in highway Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs), e.g., social network applications, advertisement distributions, road traffic report, etc. However, due to the sparse development of roadside units (or access points) and the limited connection time between fast-moving vehicles, file transfer is susceptible to frequent interruptions, and accordingly resulting in incomplete file transfers. The incomplete file transfer leads to not only poor user performance with application playback failures, but also a colossal waste of bandwidth. To tackle this issue, in this paper, we consider a bi-directional highway vehicular network scenario where request vehicle and source vehicle are in the opposite direction, and propose a fuzzy logic-based cooperative file transfer scheme (FL-CFT). With the proposed scheme, the request file can be transferred completely from the source vehicle to request vehicle through multiple relay cluster members. As for the selection of relays, in general, finding an optimal relay subject to multiple constrains is an NP-complete problem that cannot be exactly solved in polynomial time. Accordingly, a fuzzy logic approach is utilized to optimally selects relays to help transfer the file and ensure the file integrity, which considers the relative velocity, distance, and predicted connection time among vehicles. The proposed scheme is self-organized and fully distributed, which does not require any assistance from roadside units (or access points). Simulation results show that FL-CFT outperforms the state-of-the-art file transfer schemes in file integrity on highway VANETs.

Abstract:The past decade has witnessed explosive growth in wireless big data, as well as in various big data analytics technologies. The intelligence mined from these massive datasets can be utilized to optimize wireless system design. Due to the open data policy of the mainstream OSN (Online Social Network) service providers and the pervasiveness of online social services, this paper studies how social big data can be embraced in wireless communication system design. We start with our first hand experience on crawling social big data and the principal of social-aware system design. Then we present five studies on utilizing social intelligence for system optimization, including community-aware social video distribution over cloud content delivery networks, public cloud assisted mobile social video sharing, data driven bitrate adjustment and spectrum allocation for mobile social video sharing, location-aware video streaming, and social video distribution over information-centric networking.

This paper uses the hybrid cloud architecture, including the local cloud and the remote public cloud, to execute the mobile tasks with the objective of optimizing the resource allocation, while meeting the service‐level agreement requirement. Hybrid cloud is a cloud computing environment that uses a mix of on‐premises http://searchcloudcomputing.techtarget.com/definition/private-cloud and third‐party http://searchcloudcomputing.techtarget.com/definition/public-cloud services with orchestration between the 2 platforms. The mobile application could run in private cloud, but use http://searchcloudcomputing.techtarget.com/definition/cloud-bursting to access additional computing resources from a public cloud when computing demands spike. The proposed Quality of Service–based resource allocation optimization scheme across local and public cloud for resource‐constrained mobile device is formulated into a constrained optimization problem and further divided into 2 subproblems, ie, one for resource allocation for the local cloud and one for the remote public cloud, using the Lagrange method. The proposed Quality of Service–based resource allocation optimization algorithm across local and public cloud is proposed. Through the experiments, the performance of proposed algorithm is evaluated with other baseline algorithms. The results of the experiments show a performance improvement when compared to the approaches from the literature.
