The application of distributed acoustic sensing in borehole measurements allows for the use of fibre optic cables to measure strain. This is more efficient in terms of time and costs compared with the deploying of conventional borehole seismometers. Nevertheless, one known drawback for temporary deployment is represented by the freely hanging wireline cable slapping and ringing inside the casing, which introduces additional coherent coupling noise to the data. The present study proposes an explanation for the mechanism of noise generation and draws an analogy with similar wave propagation processes and phenomena, such as ghost waves in marine seismics. This observation allows to derive a ringing noise filter function, to study its behaviour and to consider known effects of the gauge length filter. After examining existing methods aimed at eliminating ringing noise and results of their application, we propose a two‐step approach: (1) developing a denoising method based on a matching pursuit decomposition with Gabor atoms and (2) subtracting the noise model for imaging improvement. The matching pursuit method focuses on decomposing the original input signal into a weighted sum of Gabor functions. Analysing Gabor atoms properties for frequency, amplitude and position in time provides the opportunity to distinguish parts of the original signal denoting noise caused by the vibrating cable. The matching pursuit decomposition applied to the distributed acoustic sensing‐vertical seismic profiling data at the geothermal test site Groß Schönebeck provides a versatile processing instrument for noise suppression.

Ocean bottom node (OBN) SRME that combines OBN and streamer data is known to be an effective way to predict surface-related multiples in OBN data. However, the available streamer data often have limited offset/azimuth coverage. Additionally, the double source wavelets due to the convolution of OBN and streamer data limit the bandwidth (loss of low and high frequency) of the predicted multiples. OBN model-based water-layer demultiple (MWD) overcomes such limitations and is a good complement of OBN SRME; MWD replaces the streamer data with the water-bottom Green's function that has no offset/azimuth limitation and keeps the full bandwidth of the input data. With Gulf of Mexico (GOM) OBN data over the Atlantis field, we illustrate the benefit of joint SRME and MWD over SRME alone with the improved attenuation of low-frequency multiples and water layer-related multiples.

Variable source depth acquisition for (an overall) improved signal-to-noise ratio in marine broadband seismic data: A modeling study

Marine seismic data acquisition has conventionally been carried out with source arrays positioned at a single depth. The resulting source-ghost notch is often taken as the limit for the bandwidth of the data. In broadband seismic data acquisition, multilevel sources (MLSs) are now being used to fill in these notches. Here we present a modeling study in which variable source-depth acquisition (VSDA) is compared with conventional single-level source and MLS acquisition. Our results indicate that an overall (not all over) improvement of signal-to-noise ratio is obtained using VSDA compared with the other source strategies. Due to the nature of VSDA, having different far-field signatures for different source depths, the amplitude variation with offset behavior of the processed VSDA data is not ideal. In stacked images, these variations are mostly seen in very shallow reflectors ([Formula: see text]).
