“…This phenomenon is due to the fact that the larger the size of the grains, the smaller the value of the hardness. As a result, drastic rise in the values of the hardness can be observed whenever there is a reduction in the size of the grains [76][77][78][79]. In this experimental investigation, higher values of hardness have been recorded in the nugget zone, due to the generation of very fine sized grains during the FSW process.…”

“…In case of AZ31, the variation in microhardness mainly caused by the size of grain and dislocation density 21 while in case of AZ91, Al and Mg solid solution and Al and Mg compound are the main reason. 24 But when size is greater than 10 µm in AZ31 then microhardness value is insensitive to variation in grain size. When grain size is refined then microhardness value increase and follow the Hall-Petch relationship.…”

“…No new peaks were observed in XRD analysis of welded sample as shown in Figure 7. 22 , 23 , 24 In Mg alloys which are having hcp crystal structure, slip occures in (002) basal plane during FSW process. 24 High intensity plane in case of 1160 rpm/45 mm-min −1 is (002), while in case of 580 rpm/45 mm-min −1 is (101), but (002) plane intensity is small which shows that (002) plane still exists.…”

“…At the area of the Nugget zone, a sharp connection line was identified and the hardness value reduced rapidly at the Al side. Hardness variation was decreased at NZ and the total hardness was enhanced due to grain resettlement of the revolving tool point [22]. The hardness in that zone is decreased when referred to as HAZ and TMAZ.…”
