Laser beam welding produces good quality welds with minimum shrinkage for sheet metal joints. The quality of welded joint depends upon surface morphology, hardness, mixing of liquid phases and metallurgical non-homogeneity induced by gradients of temperatures and cooling rate at the weld interface. In the present investigation, Titanium Grade5 (Ti) and AA2024 (Al) alloy dissimilar sheet metals are joined using Nd:YAG pulsed laser beam and the effect of welding speed on crack tendencies, the strength of weldment based on hardness and composition changes are studied. Test results reveal that higher welding speed eliminates cracks in weldment and improves surface morphology. From hardness test, it is observed that the strength of fusion zone is considerably improved at higher weld speed and the findings are supported by SEM and EDS studies.Keywords: laser beam welding; LBW; morphology; hardness; microstructure; composition.Reference to this paper should be made as follows: Kalaiselvan, K., Elango, A. and Nagarajan, N.M. The effect of Si on brittle interfacial phases and microstructural evolution of Ti/Al joints was investigated during pulsed current gas tungsten arc welding (PCGTAW) with filler wires. Interfacial microstructure and phase constituents were characterized by an optical microscopy (OM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The microstructural evolution mechanism was revealed from the perspective of the thermodynamics. It was found that the layered microstructure consisted of various Ti-Al or Ti-Si intermetallic compounds (IMCs). The effect of silicon on the reaction mechanism of fusion-welding interface mainly included that the formation of Ti5Si3 consumed most molten titanium and suppressed the reaction of titanium with aluminum. Moreover, the Ti5Si3 distributing at the grain boundary contributed to the forming of discontinuous TiAl3. The effect of silicon on the reaction mechanism of brazed interface was mainly reflected by silicon in the reaction of titanium with aluminum and the forming of Ti(AlxSi1−x)3. Abstract:The control of metal wettability is a key-factor in the field of brazing or welding-brazing. The present paper deals with the numerical simulation of the whole phenomena occurring during the assembly of dissimilar alloys. The study is realized in the frame of potential applications for the aircraft industry, considering the case of the welding-brazing of aluminum Al5754 and quasi-pure titanium Ti40. The assembly configuration, presented here, is a simplification of the real experiment. We have reduced the three-dimensional overlap configuration to a bi-dimensional case. In the present case, an aluminum cylinder is fused onto a titanium substrate. The main physical phenomena which are considered here are: the heat transfers, the fluid flows with free boundaries and the mass transfer in terms of chemical species diffusion. The numerical problem is implemented with the commercial software Comsol Multiphysics™, by coupling heat equation, Navier-Stokes and continuity equations and the free boundary motion. The latter is treated with the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian method, with a particular focus on the contact angle implementation. The comparison between numerical and experimental results shows a very satisfactory agreement in terms of droplet shape, thermal field and intermetallic layer thickness. The model validates our numerical approach.
