Johdatus ekomusikologiaan: musiikintutkimuksen vastuu ympäristökriisien aikakaudella

Abstract: Juha Torvinen JOHDATUS EKOMUSIKOLOGIAAN: MUSIIKINTUTKIMUKSEN VASTUU YMPÄRISTÖKRIISIEN AIKAKAUDELLA "Voivatko etnomusikologit pelastaa ympäristön? Meidän on pakko." Näin kirjoitti Timothy J. Cooley (2009) pari vuotta sitten Ethnomusicology-lehdessä. Cooleyn ilmaisema velvoite ei kuitenkaan rajoitu vain etnomusikologeihin vaan koskee kaikkia musiikintutkijoita, kaikkia tutkijoita, kaikkia ihmisiä. Ympäristökriisit, kuten ilmastonmuutos, saasteet, eläinlajien sukupuutto, ydinjäteongelma, sademetsien tuho, ryöstök… Show more

“…It is often the feelings considered to be positive, such as empathy, love, rejection of numbness, radical hope, encouragement and love that are seen as crucial in transformative communication (Moser 2019, 148). However, it should be noted that the transformative communication of art can be depicting emotions deemed as negative (e.g., grief, anxiety) in order to address cultural crises such as the changing climate (see also Torvinen & Välimäki 2019). Indeed, many thinkers also find emotions such as grief, anger, and anxiety, as those that can trigger social change (see also Ahmed 2004, Butler 2004.…”

“…The field of ecomusicology has been given many definitions of which Jeff Todd Titon's is perhaps the most concise one: ecomusicology is "the study of music, culture, sound and nature in a period of environmental crisis" (Allen & Dawe 2015a, 1-2). 4 I have proposed five basic principles that characterise ecomusicological research (Torvinen 2012). These principles are 1) political activism: ecomusicological work aims at influencing cultural practices and public opinions by disseminating knowledge of environmental matters and/or focusing on similar features in music/musical practices under study, 2) sustainability: musical cultures have inherent value and the right to exist, musical practices should not burden the environment, 3) topophilia and place: concrete places and/or their acoustemologies determine musical thinking and motivate ecocritical music research and musical practices, 4) affectivity: ecomusicological study often involves emotional relationships to nature under threat; ecocritical music/musical practice often aims at creating strong affective responses, and 5) ecocritical overinterpretation: the context of environmental crisis and the political-activist ethos of ecomusicology justifies ecocritical reading and/or listening of a musical composition or performance as an ecocritical text even when the music/performance in question has no explicit ecocritical topic.…”

“…something to utilize or exploit, is necessary if humankind and nature's diversity are to be persevered. (Grimley 2006;Välimäki 2009;Allen 2011a;Torvinen 2019; Välimäki [forthcoming a]), theoretical and methodological questions of ecocritical music research 25 (Allen 2011b;Allen 2012;Grimley 2011;Torvinen 2012), place and locality (Guy 2009;Ramnarine 2009;Watkins 2011;Feisst 2012), gender (von Glahn 2013, and audiovisual media (Välimäki 2015). 5 Using place as a critical category has also caused some confusion, at least when it has been associated with nationalist ideologies.…”

Luontokäsitystemme ideologinen lasti ja nykyisten ympäristökriisien mittavuus oikeuttaa nykyistä ekokriittistä tutkijaa kysymään miltä tahansa kirjalliselta tai ei-kirjalliselta tekstiltä, mitä se kertoo ympäristöstä (vrt.…”
