Jia-Wei-Yu-Ping-Feng-San Attenuates Group 2 Innate Lymphoid Cell-Mediated Airway Inflammation in Allergic Asthma

Abstract: The incidence of asthma has increased in recent decades. Although corticosteroids and bronchodilators are used in clinical practice, the control of asthma remains a challenge. Allergic asthma is characterized airway inflammation mediated by type 2 immune response. Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) are an important source of type 2 cytokines IL-5 and IL-13, which contribute to the progress of asthma. Jia-Wei-Yu-Ping-Feng-San (JWYPFS), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been widely used to treat asthma in C… Show more

“…TCM-assisted therapy can partly improve the clinical effect of conventional treatment strategies on children with asthma [ 9 ]. We have previously reported the therapeutic effect of Jia-Wei-Yu-Ping-Feng-San on asthmatic mice [ 10 ], and in this study, we will provide another new method of treating asthmatic mice with traditional Chinese herbal medicine: Yanghe Decoction. The main components of Yanghe Decoction include Rehmannia glutinosa, Colla Cornus Cervi, Cinnamomum cassia, Ephedra sinica, Semen Sinapis, Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparata, and Glycyrrhiza.…”

“…The hematoxylin–eosin staining was used to assess peribronchial inflammation. The inflammatory changes were assessed by the following score: 0, normal; 1, few cells; 2, a ring of inflammatory cells with 1 cell layer deep; 3, a ring of inflammatory cells with two to 4 cells deep; 4, a ring of inflammatory cells with more than 4 cells deep ( Xue et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Since eosinophils are not easily distinguished from other inflammatory cells in mouse lungs, they were detected by Congo red staining. The statistics of these three staining results were as described in previous studies (Huang et al, 2017;Deng et al, 2020;Xue et al, 2021). Briefly, inflammation scores are as follows: 0, no inflammatory cells; 1, occasional inflammatory cells; 2, only one layer of inflammatory cells around most bronchi or blood vessels; 3, 2 layers of inflammatory cells around most bronchi and blood vessels; 4, more than 2 layers of inflammatory cells around most bronchi or blood vessels.…”
