Jet production in polarized lepton-hadron scattering

Abstract: We calculate exact analytical expressions for O(α s ) 3-jet and O(α 2 s ) 4-jet cross sections in polarized deep inelastic lepton nucleon scattering. Introducing an invariant jet definition scheme, we present differential distributions of 3-and 4-jet cross sections in the basic kinematical variables x and W 2 as well as total jet cross sections and show their dependence on the chosen spin-dependent (polarized) parton distributions. Noticebly differences in the predictions are found for the two extreme choices,… Show more

“…A natural scale for multi-jet production in DIS may be µ 2 R = µ 2 F = 1/4 ( j p B T (j)) 2 , with the average p B T (j) being defined in the Breit frame by 2 E 2 j (1 − cos θ jP ), where the subscripts j and P denote the jet and proton. Results about this cross section including HO effects can be found in [437,239]. If the jets are defined in a modified JADE scheme, the theoretical uncertainties of the two-jet cross section can be very large due to higher order effects.…”

“…Current determinations of ∆g suffer from both a limited x coverage and fairly large theoretical scale ambiguities in polarized pp collisions for inclusive (di)jet [146,147] and pion production [148,149]. Several channels are sensitive to ∆g in ep scattering at collider energies such as DIS jet [150,151] or charm [152,153,154] production but QCD scaling violations in inclusive polarized DIS have been identified as the golden measurement. The inclusive structure function g 1 (x, Q 2 ) is the most straightforward probe in spin physics and has been determined in various fixed-target experiments at medium-to-large values of x in the last two decades. It is also the best understood quantity from a theoretical point of view.…”
