Abstract

Sununary: Four Jersey cows wcre used in a 4x4 Latin-square designed tria1. The cxperimental feeding periods were five weeks in length. During the fifth week of each period feed, faces, milk and rumen flııid samples were collected for analysis.Good quality alfalfa hay was used as sole source of roughage. Hayand 5 % urea containing concentrate mixtures were fed in the proportions of 60:40, 50:50; and 40:60.The ratio of hay to concentrate without urea was 50:50. Rations were gi"en three times a day in equal amounts. The quantity of feed fed and refused was recorded daily, and about 200 g of hayand concentrate mixture samples were collected at each feeding during the comparison periods. The faces sampk-s were taken from the rectum twice a day at the same period. The cows were milked at 5 A. M. and 5 P. M. and production was recorded.Milk samples of 50 ml were Collected each day of the comparison periods.Rumen fluid samples were drawn by a stainless stecl rumen suction strainer at 2 and 4 hours after feeding on the last two days of every comparison period. Rumen fluid pH was determined immediately af ter sampling with a glass C1ectrode Beckman pH meter. One ml of saturated mercuric chloride solution was added to i00 ml of rumen fluid and samples were kept at _30°C in a freezer un til VFA determinations were made .• II.
