Jeotgalicoccus marinus sp. nov., a marine bacterium isolated from a sea urchin

Abstract: A novel non-sporulating, non-motile, catalase-and oxidase-positive, facultatively anaerobic, moderately halophilic, Gram-positive coccus, designated JSM 076033 T , was isolated from a sea urchin (Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus) collected from the South China Sea. Strain JSM 076033 T was able to grow in the presence of 0.5-25.0 % (w/v) total salts and at pH 6.0-10.0 and 10-45 6C; optimum growth was observed with 5.0-10.0 % (w/v) total salts and at pH 7.0-8.0 and 25-30 6C. The major amino acid constituents of the ce… Show more

“…The sequence was classified using the Ribosomal Database Project website (http://rdp.cme.msu .edu/) with a 100% confidence threshold as Jeotgalicoccus spp. It showed 99% sequence identity to the 16S rRNA genes from Jeotgalicoccus marinus JSM 076033 (12) and Jeotgalicoccus sp. strain NY-2 (26).…”

“…Later, Hoyles et al (2004) isolated a third species, Jeotgalicoccus pinnipedialis, from a southern elephant seal. Jeotgalicoccus marinus was described by Chen et al (2009) and was isolated from a sea urchin, and Guo et al (2010) isolated Jeotgalicoccus huakuii from a seaside soil in China.…”

“…A third species, Jeotgalicoccus pinnipedialis, from the oral cavity of a southern elephant seal, was subsequently described by Hoyles et al (2004). To date, two more species have been described within this genus: Jeotgalicoccus marinus (Chen et al, 2009), from a sea urchin collected from the South China Sea, and Jeotgalicoccus huakuii (Guo et al, 2010), from a seaside soil sample in Shandong province of China. The main characteristics of this genus are Gram-positive, non-motile, non-endospore-forming, catalase-and oxidase-positive cocci.…”
