“…We studied the distribution of Gd-DTPA as an antimicrobial surrogate from Gd-DTPA-loaded bone cement (GLBC) as previously described [13,14]. Standardized GLBC implants made with three Gd-DTPA loads were implanted in a rabbit wound model and imaged at 7, 14, and 33 days.…”

“…However, tissue biopsies inherently do not provide continuous spatial and temporal distributions. Our laboratory has previously reported on gadolinium-labeled diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-DTPA) as an antimicrobial surrogate and the ability of 7-T MRI to quantify the distribution of Gd-DTPA over a period of 5 hours after local delivery throughout surgical wounds [13,14]. Although Gd-DTPA is not intracellularly transported [14] and does not bind protein as some antimicrobials do at systemic concentrations, it does have similar molecular weight, solubility, and diffusivity and will be locally transported very similarly to many water-soluble antimicrobials [14].…”

“…Gadolinium based contrast agents have been used as mock drugs to study the distribution of drug away from implant systems in targeted tissues such as the eye [58, 59], brain [60], bone [6163] and muscle [63, 64]. In one study by Csaky et al , the mass transport and distribution of an ocular drug released from a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymeric implant was investigated by using its surrogate, Gd-DTPA (Fig.…”

“…2) [58]. In another study with Gd-DTPA, which is similar in size and diffusion coefficient to the antimicrobials gentamicin and vancomycin, was also used to visualize drug transport from orthopedic implants [65]. In this study, implants of different materials were implanted in either the intramedullary canal or the quadriceps and the local drug distubtions away from the implants were assessed using MRI.…”
