Business process (or workflow) management is vital in enterprise application systems. Current workflow management systems (WfMSs) do not provide a clear separation between execution management and data management; such a lack of separation causes serious difficulties in managing data consistency and process change. This paper argues for an "execution independence" principle of isolating the two and thus their respective concerns. Following this principle, "universal artifacts" and a new conceptual architecture for WfMSs are developed, which help addressing many challenging issues in application development with the current WfMSs.

Business organizations maintain business processes with multiple variants because of varied business requirements of which the support of these multiple business process variants constitutes a big challenge. BPPLE tool demonstration presents an extension of Eclipse BPMN modeller to cope with the modelling, and customization of business processes at build time and run time to compose the business process variants it may have. BPPLE tool is based on the Business Process Product Line Engineering (BPPLE) approach, our proposed approach for managing a family of business process variants. We have applied BPPLE in the scenarios such as the student registration in a higher education institution. Tests carried out showed that BPPLE tool enables the customization of business process models or instances to compose business process variant models or instances, respectively.

With the wide adoption of the Internet, organizations establish collaborative networks to execute Collaborative Business Processes (CBPs). Current approaches of Process-Aware Information Systems (PAISs) to implement and execute CBPs have shortcomings: high costs and complexity of IT infrastructure to deploy the PAISs; poor support for organization autonomy, decentralized execution, global view of message exchange, and peer-to-peer interactions; and rigid platforms for generating and deploying PAISs on-demand according to the CBPs agreed in collaborative networks. To overcome these issues, this work proposes a cloud-based platform for the management of CBPs. The platform provides cloud services that enable the generation and deployment on-demand of the PAISs required to implement the agreed CBPs, as well as the execution on-demand of CBPs by fulfilling the abovementioned issues. The use of cloud computing also implies to deal with privacy, elasticity, and portability issues; the platform offers proper approaches to deal with them.
