Japanese periodical nationwide epidemiologic survey of aberrant portal hemodynamics

Abstract: AimIdiopathic portal hypertension (IPH), extrahepatic portal obstruction (EHO), and Budd–Chiari syndrome (BCS) are characterized by aberrant portal hemodynamics of unknown etiology. The aim of this study was to explore trends in the descriptive epidemiology of these diseases through periodical nationwide surveys.MethodsNationwide epidemiologic surveys were undertaken in 1999, 2005, and 2015 using the same protocol. The survey targets were selected from all departments of gastrointestinal medicine, surgery, ped… Show more

“…The prevalence of anti-MAG neuropathy patients in these hospitals was estimated, stratified by hospital size (number of beds), with a 100% sampling rate for thoroughness. This approach, previously validated in a national study of chronic diseases in Japan [10], also included the calculation of a 95% confidence interval (CI) using a multinomial hypergeometric distribution model. For the secondary survey, patient data were summarized using means, standard deviations, and percentages.…”

“…Budd-Chiari syndrome is a very rare disorder characterized by obstruction or stenosis of the main hepatic vein or hepatic portion of the inferior vena cava (IVC) that results in hepatic dysfunction and portal hypertension, which has a prevalence of 3.2 per million in the population of Japan ( 1 ). The chronic form with gradual portal hypertension is more common in Asia, whereas the acute form is more common in Europe and the USA, with hepatomegaly and ascites due to acute obstruction or stenosis, leading to death from liver failure.…”
