Japan's contribution to clinical research in gastroenterology and hepatology

Abstract: Japan's share of articles in this field was 10.6%, ranking third in the world, following the United States (35.1%) and the United Kingdom (11.5%). Japan's share of articles went up significantly as a whole (P = 0.01), while the share for RCTs showed no significant change ( P = 0.57) during this period of time. CONCLUSIONS; Japan's contribution to the field of gastroenterology and hepatology is, in general, acceptable compared with that of other counties, but the contribution for RCTs not satisfactory.

“…1 Owing to the national policy in the past, the fields of chemistry, physics, and engineering in China had outgrown the biomedical fields, in which the basic researches developed better than the clinical. 2,3 Although gastroenterology is a major specialty of clinical medicine with abundant research output, [4][5][6][7] there were yet scarce reports about its development in China. 8,9 In this current study, we tried to analyze 540 Scientometrics 69 (2006) China's research output in gastroenterology specialty journals from 1990 to 2004 based on two of the most popular bibliographic databases: Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E) of the Thomson Corporation and Medline of the National Library of Medicine in the USA.…”

“…Representation in top basic science journals, however, was sizeable and noteworthy during the same time frame. In addition, Japanese representation in other fields of medicine ranged from 1.1 to 11.4% during 1991-2000 based on top-ranking journals (Rahman et al 2001(Rahman et al , 2002a(Rahman et al ,b,c, 2003a(Rahman et al ,b,c,d, 2004(Rahman et al , 2005Takahashi et al 2002;Morimoto et al 2003;Hayashino et al 2003a,b;Rahman and Fukui 2003;Maeda et al 2003;Okamoto et al 2004). Scattered and uncoordinated efforts were undertaken as intervention programs to boost clinical research and overcome barriers in Japan.…”
