Este estudio trata de reconstruir un concepto material de la política que tanto Rousseau como Schmitt habrían elaborado como parte de su doctrina de la democracia y de la soberanía popular. En primer lugar, se centra en demostrar cómo ambos oponen una común reacción antiformalista en respuesta a la doctrina y las formas políticas liberales que les fueron coetáneas. Para ello, se aplica con carácter preferente un enfoque metodológico atento a la semántica contextual y a la historia de los conceptos. Así, en tanto que Rousseau se centra en la crítica al individualismo metodológico, Schmitt impugna los intentos liberales por ocultar lo político como núcleo de la política. A continuación, se analiza cómo ambos pensadores propugnaron una recomposición de las estructuras políticas con arreglo a un criterio democrático sustantivo, punto en el que la recepción schmittiana de Rousseau precisa complementar la primera orientación contextual con un abordaje de tipo textualista. De esta forma, Rousseau propondría una recomposición de la autoridad soberana desde la regeneración moral colectiva. Schmitt, por su parte, una intervención soberana y material del poder político en un nuevo escenario de democracia de masas.
