Janus Electrocatalysts Containing MOF-Derived Carbon Networks and NiFe-LDH Nanoplates for Rechargeable Zinc–Air Batteries

Abstract: The lack of efficient and durable bifunctional cathodic catalysts largely prevents the wide-scale applications of rechargeable Zn–air batteries (RZABs). Herein, we report a bifunctional, durable, and noble-metal-free electrocatalyst for RZABs by compositing a metal–organic framework (MOF) derived carbon network (MCN) and NiFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoplates. This design utilizes the conductivity and ultrahigh pore volume of the carbon network, boosting the catalytic activity of LDH and enhancing the … Show more

“…X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was also performed on the Asy‐cathode. The survey spectrum exhibits Ni, Fe, O, and C signals, which are consistent with the above EPMA and EDS mapping results (Figure S9, Supporting Information) 19. In addition to these elements, a F signal was also detected owing to the existence of PTFE.…”

“…As a typical two-dimensional material, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have long been studied for oxygen electrochemical reactions, especially the OER process, but the applications of MOF-derived hydroxides in ZABs are inadequate [ 175 ]. Recently, Qian and his colleagues explored the performance of the NiFe layered double hydroxides for ZABs [ 176 ]. They prepared the OER active NiFe-LDH composites supported on ORR active MOF-derived carbon network (MCN) as Janus-ORR/OER electrocatalyst for the rechargeable ZABs.…”

“…A variety of 2D materials have been found for electrocatalysis. Among heteroatomdoped carbon [14], layered metal hydroxide (LDH) [15], layered metal oxide [16], 2D metalorganic frameworks (2D-MOFs) [17], 2D covalent organic frameworks (2D-COFs) [18], graphite carbonitrides (g-C3N4) [19], hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) [20], black phosphorous (BP) [21], MXenes [22], and 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) [23][24][25], TMDs are a class of materials with great application prospects and basic research value. The chemical formula of TMDs is MX2, where M represents transition metal elements, including group IV (Ti, Zr, or Hf), group V (V, Nb, or Ta), group VI (Mo, W), group VII (Tc, Re), or group X (Pd, Pt), and X refers to a chalcogen atom (S, Se).…”
