Mining activities represent one of the main causes leading to subsidence in the natural and urban environment. Sustainable urban planning and detection of potential hazards in mining areas involve the use of adequate instruments such as the continuous monitoring of land subsidence. The complexity of urban environment demands the utilization of new methods for monitoring and quantifying the effects of the mining processes. In the last decades, considering the technological developments from the remote sensing domain, the Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) techniques offer the opportunity for early detection and continuous monitoring of subsidence in mining areas, including urban centers. Considering various parameters of mining subsidence monitoring, a review of several tens of studies realized in different mining sites, based on InSAR techniques, is presented. As mining subsidence in urban areas has a direct impact on the quality of life, the review is completed with demographic indicators assessment, followed by a study case on the dynamics of the population in an urban mining area from Romania, Ocnele Mari.

Irish Revivalist playwright J. M. Synge is often regarded as a realist. Yet what happens when his work is analysed through wider performance studies and situated alongside less familiar historical contexts? By addressing this question, Hélène Lecossois offers new and valuable perspectives on Synge's plays while at the same time engaging with the complexity of his treatment of a range of performance practices – from keening at rural funerals to the performances of 'native villagers' in the entertainment section of International Exhibitions. What emerges from her study is a dramatist acutely aware of the ability of theatre in performance to counteract relentless forward-moving narratives of modernity. Through detailed, contextualized case studies, the book simultaneously makes meaningful contributions to performance studies and opens up theoretical questions of performance relating to the status of the object on stage, the body on stage and theatrical time.

The Gaelic League was founded in 1893 with the aim of reviving the Irish language, as well as promoting home-grown industries and social reform. By the turn of the century, it had become one of the most important cultural organisations in Ireland. This article studies a central element of the league's ideology and praxis, albeit one that has thus far received little attention: its promotion of a specifically nationalist understanding of Irish space. ‘Space’ was a key trope for the Gaelic League and was linked to a number of other dominant nationalist concerns: state sovereignty, race, gender and modernity. Moreover, this article argues that a focus on ‘space’ allows for a better comparative understanding of Irish nationalism, since similar spatial logics were at play in other late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century national movements both in Europe and in the (post)colonial world.
