IUPAC-NIST Solubility Data Series. 98. Solubility of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Pure and Organic Solvent Mixtures—Revised and Updated. Part 3. Neat Organic Solvents

Abstract: This work updates Vols. 54, 58, and 59 in the IUPAC Solubility Data Series and presents solubility data for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon solutes dissolved in neat organic solvents. Published solubility data for acenaphthene, anthracene, biphenyl, carbazole, dibenzofuran, dibenzothiophene, fluoranthene, fluorene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, phenothiazine, pyrene, thianthrene, and xanthene that appeared in the primary literature from 1995 to the end of 2011 are compiled and critically evaluated. Experimental s… Show more

“…20 For anthracene, a number of literature solubility data are available in IUPAC-NIST Data Series 58 and 98. 40,41 The literature data agree well with our experimental results in the seven representative solvents, as shown in Figure 7 and Table S5. 42−46 Thus, the literature data in other solvents (60 solubility data in 51 solvents) 40,41 were used for the validation of the calculated solubilities.…”

“…The PAHs are compounds that prevail in the environment and are persistent despite their scarce solubility in water. Naphthalene, the smallest in the series, has a low but sufficient water solubility, that allows it to remain a long time in some water resources . Even though, naphthalene is produced annually in bulky quantities, is the largest component of the tar, ≈10%, and about 1.3 million tonnes are manufactured annually.…”

“…Additionally, the PBI molecule is a very stable fluorophore, used in the field of optometry, to make light‐emitting diodes and it has shown a high quantum yield . PBI shows a low solubility in many organic solvents, and both in solution and in the solid state, has high tendency to form aggregates that induce quenching of the fluorescence emission of the system.…”

“…While for target analytes, in general, there were not significant differences between the use of methanol or a methanol/dichloromethane mixture (data and discussion on individual compounds can be found in the supplementary materials, see section S1 for more information), for real aerosol samples methanol showed the best performances in terms of ability to extract compounds, thus generating a larger number of detected molecular formulas. These results can be explained by a high enough solubility of target compounds in methanol (Acree, 2013) and a generally better solubility in methanol of the organic compounds present in the aerosols.…”
