ITZ volume fraction in concrete with spheroidal aggregate particles and application: Part I. Numerical algorithm

Abstract: When the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) is treated as a separate phase, the ITZ volume fraction plays an essential role in determining the physico-mechanical properties of concrete. The intention of the present paper is to develop a numerical algorithm for the ITZ volume fraction in concrete with spheroidal aggregate particles. By applying a contact function for two spheroidal aggregate particles and introducing periodic boundary conditions, the distribution of spheroidal aggregate particles with various si… Show more

“…Garboczi and Bentz (1997) analytically approached this problem for spherical aggregate grains. Zheng et al (2011a) extended the analytical approach to RGsimulated dispersions of ellipsoidal aggregate and applied it for estimating chloride diffusivity in concrete (Zheng et al, 2011b). Of course, further extension and generalization as to grain shape would readily be possible by HADES simulation.…”

“…Models based on the equivalent modulus method especially, seem to be a natural choice because they model the concrete as a composite made of mortar and aggregates. A number of researchers have studied the elastic properties of concrete using equivalent modulus methods, such as the selfconsistent method (Hashin and Monteiro, 2002;Ramesh et al, 1996), the Mori-Tanaka method (Ricaud and Masson, 2009;Yang and Huang, 1996), and numerical methods such as discrete element model (He et al, 2012;Zheng et al, 2011).…”

“…For instance, Garboczi and Bentz [3] calculated the volume fraction of interfacial layers around spherical particles applying a theory of the nearest-surface distribution functions [4]. On the other hand, Bentz et al [5] and Zheng et al [6] simulated the volume fraction of interfacial layers around ellipsoidal particles using a similar Monte Carlo random point sampling technology, respectively. Unfortunately, both numerical results are just opposite.…”
