Item equivalence across scales: The WPPSI—R and WISC-III.

Abstract: The publication of 2 Wechsler scales with multiple overlapping items, the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-Revised (WPPSI-R) and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Ill (WISC-III), provided an opportunity to cross-validate items. Test-age equivalents corresponding to cumulative item raw scores were extracted from the manuals or estimated with ratio scores (and checked against regression-based values). WPPSI-R test-age equivalents correlated highly with WISC-III test-age equivalents (r … Show more

“…The subtest has been demonstrated to be a psychometrically sound measure of children’s language development (split-half reliability = .85; test-retest reliability = .75; concurrent validity with Stanford-Binet Form L-M = .82). For 5-year-old children, the correlation of the Vocabulary subtest with the WPPSI-R Verbal and Full Scale scores is .80 and .66, respectively (Groth-Marnat, 1997; Sattler & Atkinson, 1993; Wechsler, 1989). Verbal mental age (VMA) equivalent scores were derived from Vocabulary subtest raw scores for use in subsequent analyses.…”

“…Digit Span is a test of working memory, in which series of digits are read aloud to the child. 47 Digits forward requires repetition of series of digits in the same order, whereas digits backward requires repetition of series of digits in reverse order. 47 The total number of correctly repeated series on digits forward and backward served as an index for working memory.…”
