The burden of chronic pruritus is increasingly recognized as significant worldwide. As wet-laboratory researchers investigate the pathophysiology of chronic pruritus, epidemiologists and health services researchers are quantifying the impact of pruritus by incidence, prevalence, and quality of life measures. Outcomes researchers are also investigating factors that may predict chronic pruritus incidence and severity. Such efforts will direct resources for research, public health intervention, and clinical care.

They display similar pathogenetic and clinical characteristics and affect the quality of life significantly. However, it is unknown which affects the quality of life more adversely. Our aim is to determine which of the symptoms of pruritus and pain affects the quality of life more in negative way. Methods: Fifty patients with functional pruritus (FP) and fifty patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) were included in the study. Visual analog scale (VAS) was used to measure the severity of pruritus and pain. The World Health Organization Quality of Life BREF-TR was used to evaluate the life quality of the patients. Results: Patients of the FP group of 45 (90%) was female and 5 (10%) was male, meanwhile in the FMS group 49 (98%) was female and 1 (2%) was male. The average disease duration of the patients was 39.9±65.2 months in FP group and 112.9±103.4 months in FMS group. The average VAS scores were 7.9±1.9 in FP group and 7.4±2.1 in FMS group. When the disease duration factor was eliminated and re-evaluated at statistical analysis, the domain scores was found statistically different for both groups (p<0.05) significantly. All domain scores were correlated positively with each other. Conclusion: Pain affects the life quality of individuals more negatively than pruritus. In the treatment of patients, it should not be only aimed to relieve their symptoms but also to improve their quality of life with holistic approach.

Objective. To our knowledge, no studies have investigated the association of pruritus, which is present in almost half of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc; scleroderma), with quality of life (QOL) and disability. The objective of this study was to investigate the association of pruritus with QOL and disability in SSc. Methods. We performed a cross-sectional, multicenter study of 578 SSc patients >1 year post-enrollment in the Canadian Scleroderma Research Group Registry. Patients reported whether they experienced pruritus during the past month on most days and underwent clinical histories and medical examinations. QOL was measured using the mental and physical component summary scores of the Short Form 36, and disability was measured with the Health Assessment Questionnaire disability index. The association of pruritus with QOL and disability was estimated using linear regression, controlling for sociodemographic and disease variables. Results. A total of 248 patients (43%) reported pruritus on most days. Patients with pruritus had significantly worse mental (Hedges's g ‫؍‬ ؊0.43; 95% confidence interval [95% CI] ؊0.59, ؊0.26) and physical function (Hedges's g ‫؍‬ ؊0.51; 95% CI ؊0.68, ؊0.34) and greater disability (Hedges's g ‫؍‬ 0.46; 95% CI 0.29, 0.63) than patients without pruritus. In multivariate analyses, controlling for age, sex, marital status, education, disease duration, skin score, number of tender joints, gastrointestinal symptoms, breathing problems, Raynaud's phenomenon, and finger ulcers, pruritus was independently associated with mental (P ‫؍‬ 0.017) and physical function (P ‫؍‬ 0.003), but not disability (P ‫؍‬ 0.112). Conclusion. Pruritus is common and associated with QOL in SSc. More attention to pruritus in SSc is needed, including its measurement, etiology, trajectory, and potential methods for intervention.
