Italian normative data for a stroke specific cognitive screening tool: the Oxford Cognitive Screen (OCS)

Abstract: Cognitive deficits occur in most stroke patients and cognitive impairment is an important predictor of adverse long term outcome. However, current screening measures, such as the Mini Mental State Examination or the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, do not provide information tuned for evaluating the impact of cognitive impairment in the early phase after stroke. The Oxford Cognitive Screen (OCS) represents an important new development in this regard. The OCS is now available for assessment of Italian individuals… Show more

“…The OCS can be administered in about 15 min and can be delivered at the bedside, whenever necessary. The Italian version of the scale, with normative data on a sample of 20- to 80-year-old individuals, was used ( 38 ).…”

“…Administration of the OCS is relatively fast, that is, approximately 15 min, and testing results are summarized in a visual snapshot, or wheel of cognition. The OCS developed for the United Kingdom (UK-OCS) has been adapted and validated in other languages, such as Cantonese (Kong et al, 2016(Kong et al, , 2017Lam, Kong, Ho, Humphreys, & Weekes, 2014), Italian (Mancuso et al, 2016(Mancuso et al, , 2018, and Putonghua (Hong et al, 2018), suggesting utility for greater poststroke cognitive screening globally. The development of alternative language versions of the OCS for example, in Hong Kong (HK-OCS) followed the original OCS validation process closely and resulted in normative scores across three age groups and education levels for Cantonese speakers with very good to excellent values for validity, reliability, and internal consistency.…”

“…Semantic, episodic memory, number writing, and orientation were significant predictors of functional outcomes of Cantonese speaking chronic stroke survivors [ 24 ]. Study on the Italian version of OCS explored the influence of demographic characteristics on the test results [ 25 ]. Age, education, and to a lesser extent gender of poststroke patients were revealed affecting the scores of selected subscales.…”
