“…The quantitative research (Arcidiacono et al 2009c) provided us with information derived from standardized questionnaires about symptomatology and experiences, but here the qualitative research has allowed us to give a voice to the interconnection and comprehension of the entire relational framework. “…FMI, SRT and CQ assess stress, strain and coping, respectively examining the impact of the alcohol or drug problems, the physical and psychological symptoms experienced by the family member, their coping, and their hopefulness about the future. Further information on this phase can be found in Arcidiacono et al (2009c). The family members were mostly female (85), and they are most frequently the substance misuser's parent (47) or partner (33), concerned about their relative's active drinking or drug-taking within the last 6 months.…”

“…The means by which the family cope with this situation, and the types of support it receives (or not receive), are factors that moderate the strain-stress relationship (Orford et al, 2010). While this set of measures has been used in several studies (e.g., Copello et al, 2009b;Petra, 2014) and in different countries including Italy (Arcidiacono et al, 2010), Mexico (Orford et al, 2005a) and Singapore (Lee et al, 2011), the psychometric properties of the non-English version of these measures has not yet been explored. Results from exploratory factor analysis suggests a three factor solution for COPE, a twofactor solution for HOPE as well as two-factor solution for FMI and SRT (Orford et al, 2005b).…”
