“…While more than two-thirds of investigated cases had at least one assigned primary nurse, less than 50% of admission assessments, follow-up care planning and discharge planning were conducted, at least partially, by the responsible primary nurse(s). This reflects findings of previous studies that found that primary nursing often occurred in coincidental manner and differed considerably from nurse to nurse (Korhonen & Kangasniemi, 2013). Role ambiguity has also been reported (Fernandez et al, 2012).…”

Hence, it may be necessary to rethink, adapt, integrated or expand primary nursing (Korhonen & Kangasniemi, 2013) or to develop new models of care delivery that meet patients' increasingly complex care needs and ensure collaborative, integrated, coordinated care by various health professionals throughout the hospital and between care settings over time. As evidence about the effectiveness of primary nursing on patient outcomes and over other models of care delivery remains inconclusive (Fernandez et al, 2012;Hoffmann Kusk & Groenkjaer, 2016), future research will need to investigate the relationship between primary nursing and quality of care.…”

“…In nursing science, the understanding of primary nursing has varied from philosophy to different interpretation applications of working model depending on context . The common for different interpretations is that the primary nursing working model creates a favourable setting for establishing a caring relationship with the parents of a premature infant.…”
