It’s Not Just the Site, It’s the Contents: Intra-domain Fingerprinting Social Media Websites Through CDN Bursts

Abstract: The website fingerprinting (or inter-domain WSF), enhanced by various machine learning techniques, has shown its power to identify websites a user has visited. To our best knowledge, a finer-grained problem of web page fingerprinting (or intra-domain WPF) has not been systematically studied by our research community. The WPF attackers, such as government agencies enforcing Internet censorship, are keen to identify the particular web pages (e.g., a political dissident's social media page) visited by the target … Show more

“…User traffic identification attacks are well-known, and several research works have proposed fingerprinting attacks that identify websites [33], [34], [35], [36], [37], [16], [17], [18], webpages [38], [39], videos [40], [41], [42], [43], browsers [44], [45], and even newer protocols [46] from encrypted communications. In the widely studied website fingerprinting attack, a network attacker identifies the website accessed by a user over a communication channel, with recent research works exploit algorithms from machine learning and deep learning.…”

“…Note that the importance of information grows manifold when collected over a longer period of time [6]- [9], since it ensures sufficient coverage of users and also reflects changing trends in their behavior. Encrypted Traffic Analysis (ETA) [10]- [22] (specifically, webpage fingerprinting) is the most promising non-intrusive method to collect such information for long periods of time by merely capturing the encrypted traffic exchanged between the websites' server and the end-users. The webpages are identified by formulating signatures that can identify them uniquely when accessed by users through encrypted channels.…”

“…The webpages are identified by formulating signatures that can identify them uniquely when accessed by users through encrypted channels. While several existing webpage fingerprinting attacks [10]- [22] target particular users, our goal is to target a large number of users visiting a particular website, i.e., mass surveillance. Figure 1 shows a high-level objective of this paper.…”
