It’s not about the hoist: A narrative literature review of manual handling in healthcare

Abstract: The manual handling of people and objects is integral to the provision of nursing care to patients globally. Despite over 30 years of research intended to guide improvements for nurses’ safety, substantial rates of manual handling injuries persist internationally within the nursing profession. This paper reviews the contemporary international literature regarding manual handling interventions noting the unique context for injury prevention strategies within healthcare. The review includes the recognition of un… Show more

“…The assessment of a behavioral intervention should include behavioral outcomes (Michie and Johnston, 2012). The H-O instrument can remedy the detected lack of instruments addressed to the assessment of the proximal effect of manual handling training on intermediate variables that link training to distal changes in employee behavior (Hogan et al, 2014; Kay et al, 2014). Moreover, the H-O instrument can contribute to the understanding of the processes in training implementation.…”

“…An area in which we consider that the SsObserWork approach could be of great interest is in training for the mobilization of patients in hospitals. The structure of the H-O instrument (combined field format and category systems) facilitates adaptations and extensions to include interaction dimensions that are essential to address the complexity of manual handling in healthcare settings (Kay et al, 2014). A second limitation has to do with the high time and material cost of the coding and sequential analysis process.…”

“…In addition, both patients and caregivers found the STurDi device easy to use and were satisfied with it. Despite there being numerous published surveys and industry records of compensation claims, there are few published studies on nurses’, caregivers’, and patients’ experience of using assistive devices for lifting and transferring ( 9 ). Lifting and transfer devices are now widely used in geriatric care in high-income countries with “no lifting” policies commonly found in health care settings in the developed world.…”

“…Injuries and musculoskeletal disorders (especially lowback pain and neck/shoulder pain) due to moving and handling of people (MHP) are a long-term concern in the healthcare sector (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7). Providing the healthcare sector with comprehensive information on MHP in the form of guidelines is a strategy widely applied globally, with multiple state or federal MPH guidelines existing in Europe, the US, and Australasia (4,8,9).…”
