It's better to give than to receive: Psychological need satisfaction mediating links between wasta (favouritism) and individuals' psychological distress

Abstract: Wasta (i.e. the distribution of favours among family, friends and tribe; favouritism; nepotism) permeates numerous Middle Eastern cultures, representing a method of strengthening social ties and showing loyalty/generosity, but also representing one of the largest sources of corruption in Middle East. “…PNS has been studied as mediator in numerous studies (e.g. Alwerthan et al, 2017;Kovjanic et al, 2013;Van den Broeck et al, 2008), confirming the importance of this motivational factor as an underlying mechanism for explaining individual attitude and behavior in quest for well-being in a social setting. The conservation of resources theory (Hobfoll, 1989(Hobfoll, , 2001(Hobfoll, , 2002 suggests that individuals seek to protect, retain, and accumulate the resources that are desirable and instrumental for attaining higher order goals.…”

“…This benefit extends to organisations, which can use wasta to secure qualified and loyal employees when certain skills are lacking (Mann, 2013(Mann, , 2014. Wasta provision is associated with higher levels of need satisfaction and correspondingly lower levels of distress (Alwerthan, 2016;Alwerthan et al, 2017). However, wasta can have negative aspects, both for its practitioners and for others.…”

“…However, its connotations are wider than this simplistic definition. Some recent research depicts wasta , similar to other social networks such as guanxi and blat , as a common, if not necessary, way of doing business in the regions and cultures in which each practice prevails (Alwerthan et al, 2017; Gold & Naufal, 2012; Hutchings & Weir, 2006a, 2006b). It could therefore be argued that Wasta is not just favouritism or corruption, but rather a part of the culture that creates cohesion in the countries of the Arab Middle East.…”

“…This paper presents a theoretic model considering corruption for the first time as a psychosocially contagious disorder. Thus, a limited literature was found in relation to this context 1,[3][4][5][6][7][8] , and nothing at all was found considering corruption as a medical or psychosocial condition. Corruption is similar to AIDS in terms of transmission, course and consequences.…”

“…Still, the phenomenon of corruption continues with all its types to be one of the most important structural problems that developing societies experience 1 , particularly in any society undergoing rapid social transition from a closed collective system to an open developing society, as it is the case in the Iraqi Kurdistan 2 . Wasta (distribution of favours among family, friends and tribe) is representing one of the largest sources of corruption in several countries in the Middle East 3 . It has been shown to be psychologically more beneficial to the givers of corruption than to the receivers.…”
