It's been a hard day's night: A diary study on hardiness and reduced sleep quality among naval sailors

Abstract: Several people have contributed to the completion of this PhD thesis, and I would like to express my gratitude to them. First, thanks to all of the contributors and participants in the Royal Norwegian Navy. Ragnar Vaernes at Falc Nutec, for stimulating my interest in operational research. My main supervisor Dr. Olav Kjellevold Olsen, without whom this project never would have seen the light of day. Thank you for the guidance, trust, thoughtful discussions, and showing me how to thrive as an academic. My co-sup… Show more

“…In contrast, when the work pressure is relatively low, task performance may be less dependent of such restoration of resources and may even increase apathy and reduce performance due to a larger gap between energy levels and task demands ( Gardner, 1986 ). It is also noteworthy that sleep differs greatly from night to night for the individual officers, due to factors like noise, alarms, and weather conditions ( Nordmo et al, 2020 ). Notably, even though recovery processes contribute to replenishment of resources, we argue that sleep represents a supplementary strategy adding to the effects of physical and mental recovery, as defined in the current study.…”

“…Furthermore, the completion of standard sleep diary is relatively time-consuming for shift workers, thus they may show lower compliance. This may be the reason why most researchers only required sailors or submariners to report TST or overall sleep quality in the sleep diary (Nordmo et al, 2020; Paul & Love, 2022).…”
