“…Thus, the proclaimed crisis of care seems to involve more than lack of time, representing also a shift in orientations to, and valuations of time, related to notions of what care is and should be in a modern hospital context. Temporality is, however, rarely treated as a research object in its own right in studies of healthcare organisations and caring relationships (Habran and Battard, 2019;Pedersen and Roelsgaard Obling, 2020). This study contributes to the literature on the current condition of care by exploring the temporal structuring of caring practices among nurses on a Norwegian cancer ward, and emphasising the need to rethink why and how time to care matters.…”

“…Waterworth (2003) argues that nurses' experiences of time, referred to as temporal reference frameworks (Zerubavel, 1979), are not a matter of individual conceptualisation necessarily but are associated with implicit shared understandings of temporality inherent in teamwork. Drawing on Waterworth's argument, Pedersen and Roelsgaard Obling (2020) caution against leaping to presumptions that temporal structures are inherently more or less humane, for example, not assuming that standardisation is necessarily inhumane. The current study demonstrates that good care is typically a synthesis of temporal structures.…”

“…The modern hospital is a context where the focus on time optimisation has been concomitant with an increased use of universally designed infrastructure, permeated by standardised and digitalised technologies. According to the promoters of this technological development, digitalisation bears the promise of improved efficiency and quality of care, by altering the temporal structures of treatment trajectories and work practices (Pedersen & Roelsgaard Obling, 2020). Hence, 'faster' is taken as a corollary of 'better' , thus enabling improved access to healthcare services, better allocation of economic and human resources, and resilience in the face of new emerging demographic challenges (Adam, 2004;Pedersen & Roelsgaard Obling, 2020).…”

However, increased digitalisation in and of healthcare systems has also been said to have wide-reaching implications, with unintended and often opposing or surprising outcomes.…”
