“It keeps eating at you, little by little”: a photo essay on drought experiences across Morocco's agro-pastoral landscapes

Abstract

Drought in MoroccoRecurrent droughts and water scarcity are characteristic of Morocco's climate and agroecosystems. These conditions have long challenged the country's farmers and agricultural sector. Yet Morocco's diverse biocultural landscapes are a testament to rural communities' ingenious adaptation to these challenges, including long-held agricultural traditions such as the integration of trees, crops and livestock in resilient smallholder production systems. Drought experiences across Morocco 581The authors thank all featured interviewees for sharing their time and stories with us. This essay collates their messages and individual drought accounts, which the authors aimed to present true to how they were told. Yet, the process of translating and editing the interviews could have introduced unintended changes in meaning. Responsibility for how participants' accounts are re-presented here, thus solely rest with us. The faces of all subjects in this photo essay have been blurred, to protect their rights in the commercial distribution of our work.
