‘It is a different type of learning’. A survey-based study on how simulation educators see and construct observer roles

Abstract: BackgroundSimulation is reported as an appropriate replacement for a significant number of clinical hours in pregraduate programmes. To increase access for learners, educators have looked to understanding and improving learning in observer roles. Studies report equivalent learning outcomes and less stress in observer roles. However, reports on the prevalence, use and perceived value of observer roles from the educator’s perspective are lacking.MethodsAn exploratory survey for Australian and New Zealand (ANZ) s… Show more

“…The observer role in simulation is an opportunity to develop and rehearse those skills. 18 The P&D scenario design has not been the focus of studies in emotional activation to date. In this study, hands-on learners' emotional activation during P&D scenarios was significantly higher than observers, but again that difference was small.…”

“…This activation of observers needs to be balanced with the needs of hands-on learners. 18 Observers in the room during scenarios may distract hands-on learners. 47 Our observers were provided with instructions to be unobtrusive during the action phases and were located away from the bed space.…”
