Isotopic effects on non-linearity, molecular radius and intermolecular free length

Abstract: Computation of non-linearity parameter (B/A), molecular radius (r m ) and intermolecular free length (L f ) for H 2 O, C 6 H 6 , C 6 H 12 , CH 3 OH, C 2 H 5 OH and their deuterium-substituted compounds have been carried out at four different temperatures, viz., 293.15, 303.15, 313.15 and 323.15 K. The aim of the investigation is an attempt to study the isotopic effects on the non-linearity parameter and the physicochemical properties of the liquids, which in turn has been used to study their effect on the inte… Show more

“…where c = C P /C V is the ratio of isobaric and isochoric heat capacities that can be obtained from the isentropic and isothermal compressibility coefficients j S and j T using the thermodynamic relation j T /j S = C P /C V .Beyer's parameters of nonlinearity (B/A) [28][29][30][31], which determine the hardness of liquids, were calculated from the relation…”

“…The curves for the variation of Beyer's non-linearity parameter B/A with mole fraction x 1 for the systems under investigation are displayed in figure 6 at T = (308.15 and 313.15) K. The non-linearity parameter B/A which determines the hardness of a liquid [28][29][30][31] varies in the order: DBE > TCE > HEX > DCE. For the binary liquid mixture (1,2-DCE + hexan-1-ol), the B/A values decrease with the increase in the mole fraction of 1,2-DCE up to x 1 % 0.8 indicating that the hardness of the liquid decreases with the increase in the concentration of 1,2-DCE.…”

“…Further general formulation for the non-linearity parameter in terms of the acoustical parameters of liquids is made by using the expression for the sound velocity u, and introducing the contribution due to isobaric acoustic parameters K and the isothermal acoustic parameter K . The expression for B/A has been expressed as [19,22] …”

“…Nomoto Received24February 2010, accepted 8September 2010 and Hartmann [17,18] have studied B/A using their own hypothesis. Recently,D ey et al [19] studied isotopic effects on the non-linearity parameter on water and four organic liquids and their deuterium substituted compounds.…”
