Isotopic anthropology of rural German medieval diet: intra- and inter-population variability

Abstract: This study investigates the diet of an eleventh century CE parish community located in northwestern Germany. We assessed the isotopic compositions of human (n = 24) and faunal (n = 17) bone collagen (δ 13 C col , δ 15 N col ) and human structural carbonate (δ 13 C sc ) using skeletal material recovered from the Dalheim cemetery. Traditional interpretation of the isotopic data indicates that Dalheim residents likely relied on a C 3 plant-based diet and consumed some terrestrial animal products without evidence … Show more

“…4). The hare and fish isotope values are similar to those previously reported in the literature (Bocherens 1991;Müldner and Richards 2005;Olsen et al 2016). Fish δ 15 N values are consistent with the trophic level of the various species, and the range observed in the Sainte-Anne garbage dump and the Dominican convent overlaps.…”

“…This method has already demonstrated its usefulness in identifying specific societal changes taking place in the early Middle Ages across Europe (e.g., Müldner 2009;Hakenbeck et al 2010;Lightfoot et al 2012;López-Costas and Müldner 2016;Kaupová et al 2016;Olsen et al 2018Salazar-García et al 2014aSalazar-García et al 2016;Guede et al 2018). Our study focuses on the Missignac-Saint Gilles le Vieux site, whose occupation dated from the middle of the fifth to the early thirteenth century AD illustrating the modifications of settlement, agro-pastoral, and funerary practices taking place in South-East France during this period as described by historians.…”
