The stable isotope (δ 13 C, δ 18 O) composition of a collection of Lower Jurassic brachiopods and oysters from the Andean Basin of northern Chile was analyzed. The results allow the first reconstruction of absolute water temperatures for several ammonite zones in the Lower Jurassic of South America. The temperature record starts with comparatively high values in the Late Sinemurian (average: 27.0°C; Raricostatum Zone). Just before the Sinemurian-Pliensbachian transition, temperatures dropped to an average of 24.3°C. The lowest temperature value in the dataset was recorded for a brachiopod shell of the latest Pliensbachian Spinatum Zone (19.6°C). No data are available for the Early Toarcian, but results for the late Toarcian show again comparatively warm conditions (average: 24.4°C; Thouarsense-Levesquei zones). Even though more material and analyses are necessary to corroborate the recorded temperatures, the present dataset seems to indicate the global nature of the Late Pliensbachian Cooling Event. In contrast, the global warming during the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event has not been recorded due to a lack of Early Toarcian material. The δ 13 C record of brachiopods and oysters documents a gradual increase in values representing background conditions. Oyster shells were used for high-resolution stable isotope analyses and show seasonal temperature fluctuations over a period of around 3 years in the life time of the bivalves. If explained only by temperatures, the δ 18 O values point to a minimum estimate for the seasonality in the late Toarcian of slightly more than 3°C.

The variety of depositional facies of a Lower Jurassic carbonate platform has been investigated on the island of Mallorca along a transect comprising six stratigraphic proiles. Twenty-nine facies and sub-facies have been recognized, grouped into seven facies associations, ranging in depositional environment from supratidal/terrestrial and peritidal to outer platform. Spatial and temporal (2D) facies distribution along the transect relects the evolution of the carbonate platform with time showing diferent facies associations, from a broad peritidal platform (stage 1) to a muddy open platform (stage 2), and inally to a peritidal to outer carbonate platform (stage 3). Stage 1 (early Sinemurian to earliest late Sinemurian) corresponds to a nearly-lat peritidal-shallow subtidal epicontinental platform with facies belts that shifted far and fast over the whole study area. The evolution from stage 1 to stage 2 (late Sinemurian) represents a rapid looding of the epicontinental shallow platform, with more open-marine conditions, and the onset of diferential subsidence. During stage 3 (latest Sinemurian), peritidal and shallow-platform environments preferentially developed to the northeast (Llevant Mountains domain) with a rapid transition to middle-outer platform environments toward the northwest (Tramuntana Range domain). Stages 1 and 3 present facies associations typical of Bahamian-type carbonates, whereas stage 2 represents the demise of the Bahamian-type carbonate factory and proliferation of muddy substrates with suspension-feeders. The described platform evolution responded to the interplay between the initial extensional tectonic phases related to Early Jurassic Tethyan rifting, contemporaneous environmental perturbations, and progressive platform looding related to the Late Triassic-Early Jurassic worldwide marine transgression and associated accommodation changes.

The stratigraphic distribution of larger benthic foraminifera and other microfossils recognizable in thin sections has been investigated in three stratigraphic profiles (Son Maina, S'Heretat and Cuevas de Artà) along the Lower Jurassic shallow-water carbonate platform succession (Es Barraca Member) of the Llevant Mountains in the Mallorca Island. Here, the microfossil assemblage contains abundant benthic foraminifera and calcareous algae, including the microproblematic Thaumatoporella parvovesiculifera (Raineri) and the typical Liassic species Palaeodasycladus mediterraneus (Pia), which has allowed a better age constraint of the succession. Four consecutive biozones (scheme of Septfontaine 1984) have been recognized based on the stratigraphic distribution of imperforate foraminifera, which are documented by the first time in the Balearic Basin: Biozone A (interval Zone) is characterized by the occurrence of small Siphovalvulina sp. and Mesoendothyra sp. and some Lituosepta ancestors. Biozone B (lineage Zone), whose base is marked by the first occurrence of L. recoarensis Cati and the top by the first appearance of primitive forms of Orbitopsella. Biozone B/C1 transition, characterized by the presence of very primitive forms of Orbitopsella. Finally, Biozone C1 (lineage Zone) marked by the first occurrence of Orbitopsella aff. primaeva (Henson) but still with L. recoarensis. This distribution of foraminiferal zones is consistent with a Sinemurian age for the Es Barraca Member, with its top very unlikely penetrating into the Pliensbachian. The proposed biostratigraphic scheme is comparable with those established for other western Tethyan margins such the High Atlas of Morocco and the Betic Cordillera in southern Spain. The reconstruction of the depositional transect across these profiles shows the progressive lost of the upper biozones towards the northeast, evidencing the existence of significant hiatuses in some sections of the Llevant Mountains domain, and allowing to infer an intra-Pliensbachian early stage of platform fragmentation and erosion, or alternatively non-deposition, probably coeval with progradation of deltaic siliciclastics to the northwest part of the Mallorca island. The new biostratigraphic data presented here highlights the need to review and clarify the current stratigraphic scheme established for the Lower Jurassic of Mallorca.
