“…Furthermore, storms tend to be high-intensity and short-duration (Jiang et al 2021a). As expected, vegetation cover mirrors geographical trends on rainfall, spices adapted to arid terrain are predominant in the north, whilst lush, more perennial vegetation is widespread in the south (Ling et al 2022). The water table exhibits extensive variation due to the high time-clustering of rainfall.…”

“…The Group 4 (MB) and Group 10 (D7) samples had the most negative oxygen isotope values of all groundwater samples, as shown in Figure 10a, indicating that the deep groundwater may have been recharged by extreme or intense rainfall (Darling et al, 2003;Xu et al, 2019). The δ 18 O = À11.55 and À 12.23‰ for the MB and D7 samples are inconsistent with the signal of modern precipitation recharge, which may be an early precipitation recharge because the isotopic temperature effect is particularly pronounced in arid and semi-arid regions, and almost 60% of the precipitation in the study area is from summer (Ling et al, 2022). Small rainfall intensities cannot penetrate the thick envelope to form an adequate recharge.…”

“…Because the nearby outgoing water recharges near the front edge of the foothill, where the TDS concentration is considerably lower. In contrast, the Ziwu Ridge, which divides the Jinghe and Luohe Rivers in eastern Qingyang, also recharges the Qingyang area with outflow runoff but exhibits a considerably higher TDS concentration, probably because of the hydrogeological conditions and because the Dongzhi Plateau is a relatively independent hydrological unit (Ling et al, 2022).…”

“…Weathering of parent rocks is one of the major mechanisms controlling the concentrations of chemical constituents and salinity in the groundwater (Ling et al 2022). To understand the impact of evaporite salts, silicate rocks, and carbonate rocks on groundwater salinization in the study area, the relationships between SO4 2-+Cl -and HCO3 -, as well as the relationship between SO4 2-+HCO3 -and Ca 2+ +Mg 2+ milliequivalent concentration ratios, were examined (Yu et al 2022).…”
