Isothermal crystallization kinetics of poly(butylene terephthalate‐co‐sebacate) copolymer

Abstract: Poly(butylene terephalate) (PBT) and poly(butylene terephthalate-co-sebacate) (PBTS) copolymers containing 5 mol % and 10 mol % sebacate components (M n ¼ 12,700-14,600) were synthesized by polycondensation. The isothermal crystallization kinetics and melting behaviors after isothermal crystallization of the polymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The equilibrium melting temperatures of the polymers were determined by Hoffman-Weeks equation. Analysis of the crystallization kineti… Show more

“…The results of T m0 for these polymers are tabulated in Table 2. In the literature, the T m0 of PBT has been investigated to be 229.2°C [17], 233°C [2], and 236°C [11, 12, 19] which are close to our present data, 230.1°C. Figure 4 plots T m0 of the copolyesters versus the composition in PBTF.…”

“…In fact, the crystallization behavior and the crystallinity of copolymers are strongly influenced by composition, kind, and distribution of the comonomeric units along the chain. Previous studies [16–23] mainly focused on introducing different saturated dicarboxylic acids or diols into the chain of PBT to change the crystallization behaviors of copolymers. On the other hand, the unsaturated bonds offer sites for further crosslinking reactions which lead to polymers with improved mechanical properties.…”

“…The value of ÁH Ã f for PMP is 117.2 J g À1 . 28 The calculated data are listed in Table 1. As anticipated, the crystallinity of PMP/SBS blends is the lowest no matter whether in 5% or 10% mass fraction also because of the poor compatibility between SBS and PMP.…”

“…However, from our results, the overall crystallization rate did not decrease, but increase considerably. Therefore, the increase in crystallization rate could only be ascribed to the improvement in nucleation efficiency by incorporation of the PESe segment …”
